Why Women Find it Harder to Lose Weight than Men

Brains

There was a study done to look into the brain and how it dealt with cravings and hunger.  After fasting for 20 hours, both the men and women in the study were shown their favorite food but not allowed to eat it.  The scans showed that once the men saw the food, there was no brain activity that they were hungry, but the opposite was with the women.  Those who ran the study theorized that the women felt hungry might be linked to a primal need to eat to support fertility and pregnancy.

It is also very common for women to eat their emotions, both good and bad.  Eat to heal a broken heart or to celebrate something, we are guilty as charged.  The men are not immune from this drive, but women tend to behave this way more.

The Need for Speed

When men and women begin a weight loss program, formal or self-guided, the men will lose a larger amount of weight right away.  They are immediately rewarded for their efforts from both the scale and their appearance.  With women, this is not as much the case.

On the upside for the women, they tend to have a more steady weight loss over a longer period of time while the men’s early success drops lower.  At the end of six months of similar weight loss regimes, the difference between men and women would be very little.  The hard part is sticking with it for the long haul.

It’s Not Fair!

Weight loss is something many people have to deal with.  Changing eating and physical habits are hard, but the long term benefits are worth it.  Finding motivation to keep going can sometimes be the hardest part of it all.  Yes, there are differences between men and women, but that should not derail your progress.
